The Role

Designs components or portions of systems and modifies existing designs to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing operations. Utilizes computer-aided design equipment and/or graphic tools such as, CAD, CAM, NX, or CATIA. Gathers information, makes studies, computes calculations, and prepares original rough layouts, sketches to present design proposal. Coordinates design criteria with engineering, manufacturing, tooling, material, and planning group such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials, and contractual specifications.

This position is for a structural designer in the A4W Reactor Plant Planning Yard (Department E83) supporting maintenance, overhaul, and modernization of CVN68 Class aircraft carriers. The successful applicant will be responsible for developing designs for ship modifications involving shipboard structures, such as component foundations, pressure containment structures, bulkheads, decks, tanks, equipment stowages, component lifting and handling mechanisms, and for the development of engineering drawings and 3D models in support of these efforts. This will involve the use of 3D modeling tools including Autodesk Inventor and SIemens NX, and modern data capture technologies like laser scanning. The successful candidate will support maintenance work on all CVN68 Class hulls, which may include travel to the west coast and foreign maintenance activities.

The selected candidate should have experience with 3D computer aided design (CAD) software. Experience with the Microsoft Office Suite. Candidate must have good written and verbal communication skills and work well in a collaborative environment. A familiarity with hull outfitting, structural welding, protective coatings, corrosion prevention mechanisms, bolted joint design, and nuclear shielding would be beneficial. A background in laser scanning and point cloud management would be beneficial. The ability to physically access a wide variety of work sites, including those aboard commissioned ships, the use of vertical and inclined ladders, and may involve limited kneeling, stooping, standing, etc. Also the ability to obtain and retain a security clearance and may require the ability to obtain and retain full or partial radiation worker qualifications.

May require short-duration work away from NNS in such areas as San Diego, CA, Bremerton, WA, Yokosuka, Japan or other areas of ship operations.

Must Have

Associate's Degree and 1 years of relevant experience

One of the following may be used as equivalent to Associate's Degree to meet minimum qualifications:

  • NNS Apprentice School graduate

  • Navy Nuclear Power School (NNPS) graduate

  • High School/GED and 2 years of related Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience

  • High School/GED and 4 years of non-related Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience

Nice to Have

  • Experience with Autodesk Inventor and/or Siemens NX is preferred.

    • Experience with structural ship checking is preferred.
    • Experience modeling structures is preferred.
