The Role

This position is for an electrical designer in the Networks Communications and Automation Department (E44) as the lead department Scoping Coordinator. Responsibilities will include oversight of the department’s Engineering Scoping activities, assembling cost estimates, and submitting data, ensuring all impacts are identified and accurately estimated. Excellent communication skills are essential to work with a wide breadth of the department and to ensure that the notifications and schedules are identified. This position requires regular communication with Engineering Management and other internal and external customers including other Engineering departments, Planning, Contracts, and Trades.

Designs components or portions of systems and modifies existing designs to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing operations. Utilizes computer-aided design equipment and/or graphic tools such as, CAD, CAM, NX, or CATIA. Gathers information, makes studies, computes calculations, and prepares original rough layouts, sketches to present design proposal. Coordinates design criteria with engineering, manufacturing, tooling, material, and planning group such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials, and contractual specifications. Exclude classifications in which incumbents predominantly perform drafting assignments.

This position will also support Configuration Management for the E44 department, with responsibility for the Software Configuration Management Database, the Controlled Items Library and maintaining the Software Repository in the LBTF. This role requires maintaining stringent control of hardware components and their associated system software configurations, at the component level, in order to ensure that prescribed functionality is provided and special configuration management processes are invoked. Near the end of the contract, the final software configurations are created and become deliverables which are provided to the customer. Also, this position will maintain the Change Control Process for all of the software by using the Software Change Requests (SCR) process for systems that have reached Operational Control within the Test Engineering environment. The successful candidate may be responsible for developing ship modification designs, and developing engineering drawings and/or 3D model support of these efforts.

Must Have

Associate's Degree and 3 years of relevant experience

One of the following may be used as equivalent to Associate's Degree to meet minimum qualifications:

  • NNS Apprentice School graduate

  • Navy Nuclear Power School (NNPS) graduate

  • High School/GED and 2 years of related Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience

  • High School/GED and 4 years of non-related Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience

Nice to Have

  • Candidate should have a thorough knowledge of accepted design/drafting methods and concepts, circuit designs, and be familiar with basic engineering and design principles relating to electrical circuits.

  • Candidate should be able to review system owner drawings to determine functional operating and installation requirements.

  • Candidate should be proficient in the use of AutoCAD, Team Center, SAP, as well as other common designer applications.

  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills are essential so that the candidate can lead discussions with people from different technical backgrounds and different levels of knowledge of the CVN 78 program. QA Checking of all electrical products.

  • Familiar with Ship Specifications for Electrical to be able to support the electrical design.
