The Role

Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.

The SSN(X) Fluid Systems Team is looking for a Mechanical Engineer to join their team in order to support the development of the next generation fast attack submarine. This specific position is intended for the reactor plant fluid systems design group in Department E11. This is an opportunity to get in at the beginning of a new design, and influence what will become the Navy’s premier attack submarine platform.

The incumbent will be responsible for:

  • Writing technical design recommendation submittals, developing calculation packages, and identifying and researching system design areas of improvement and technology development (e.g., use of robotic inspections, alternate design materials, advanced manufacturing techniques, etc.).

  • Researching, planning, designing, and developing mechanical products on SSN(X) reactor plant fluid systems such as instrumentation, fluid system piping and fittings, machines/components, and mechanical, thermal hydraulic, or heat transfer systems for the production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy.

  • Researching, planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems.

  • The candidate will also support the identification, research, and implementation of new areas of improvement and technology development (e.g., use of robotic inspections, alternate design materials, advanced manufacturing techniques, etc.).

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 2 years of relevant exempt experience;

Master’s Degree and 0 year of relevant professional experience

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice to Have

Preferred qualifications are as follows:

• Knowledge of submarine machinery, and how it interfaces with the structural, electrical, and fluid piping systems.

• Critical thinking and problem solving skills.

• Excellent communication (both written and verbal).

• Demonstrated abilities to organize, lead, and present complex/advanced projects to leadership at NNS, and external parties including Electric Boat (EB), Naval Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) and NAVSEA.

• Experience with fluid system design, project management, fluid flow analysis, and the mechanical design of piping and piping components.
