The Role

Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.

This position supports the Nuclear Engineering department E86 for the Virginia Class (VCS) project. Specifically, this position is for the Nuclear Fluid Systems Group which provides hands-on waterfront engineering support and oversight for the construction and testing of nuclear Reactor Plant and non-nuclear Steam Plant machinery and fluid systems. This includes working with piping, simple and complex valves, pumps and heat exchangers.

Typical duties in this role include the following:

  • Acting as lead engineer for multiple Steam and/or Reactor Plant systems

  • Performing on-site inspections of construction issues that arise during submarine construction in support of resolving Engineering Reports; often working out of waterfront offices to effectively support those deckplate inspections

  • Communicating with construction supervision, trades, test engineering and local government representatives (NRRO/RPCO/SOS) on a regular basis

  • Using technical writing skills to develop, review and approve technical work instruction such as SCNIs and SCNPs as well as deferral paperwork such was DFS/WDRs supporting Ship Certification

  • Review, interpret and maintain construction drawings for fluid systems and components (arrangement and fabrication)

  • Support production meetings on behalf of engineering in order to support timely resolutions and provide engineering insight on construction issues

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of relevant exempt experience;

Master’s Degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience;

Ph.D. and 0 years of experience.

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Final Security Clearance Required.

Nice to Have

The successful candidate should have the following:

  • Possess analytical/problem solving skills to resolve technical issues which arise during submarine construction

  • Strong working knowledge of Reactor Plant and/or Steam Plant operations and system make-up

  • Communication/relational skills to interface and discuss technical issues with technical and non-technical personnel as well as government representatives/customers and vendors

  • Willingness to actively work on the waterfront to support on-sight inspections of system problems and provide support to trades during system testing and construction
