The Role

Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.

This mechanical engineer position acts as a technical member of the Plant Engineering Fire Protection Team, which oversees the execution of fire protection studies, projects, and ongoing maintenance for Buildings, Dry Docks, Piers and other Facilities. The candidate must be familiar with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards, the Virginia Construction Code (VCC), Virginia Statewide Fire Prevention Code (VSFPC), and other related codes and standards. The candidate should have a sound working knowledge of fire alarm and detection systems, fire sprinkler systems, clean agent suppression systems, and related technologies.

This position will lead and coordinate the execution of contracted inspections, routine maintenance, and construction projects related to fire protection systems across the Shipyard. The candidate will provide technical guidance to internal and external customers on fire protection, life safety, and related matters. This position interacts with other project teams where installation of Fire Protection systems is a subset of the project goals to ensure that proper design, installation and commissioning is accomplished. This position will review plans, calculations, and submittals for fire protection systems to ensure compliance with code and contractual requirements. This position leads and coordinates engineering evaluations related to initial installation, replacement, or refurbishment of fire protection systems. The candidate will develop cost estimates and provide input to the Facilities Long Range Strategic Plan for planned and emergent fire protection projects.

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 9 years of relevant exempt experience;

Master’s Degree and 7 years of relevant professional experience;

Ph.D. and 4 years of experience.

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice to Have

• Registered Professional Engineer (PE) in Fire Protection, Mechanical, or other related discipline.

• Ability to build rapport and positive relationships with our production, engineering, safety, fire department, maintenance, and contractor staffs.

• Shipyard/Nuclear facilities experience is desirable.

• Ability to write instructions in a clear, concise manner.

• Certified Fire Protection Specialist certification, or the ability to obtain
