Who we are

HII – Mission Technologies is currently seeking an Environmental Health and Safety Manager to join our Environmental Health and Safety Business Unit! When a U.S. Navy ship needs repairs, they call us! This position will work at all our locations in the Hampton Roads area. This position will be part of a collaborative EHS Team that provides Environmental Health and Safety direction, leadership, and guidance at all HII sites. The EHS Manager is responsible to the Corporate EHS Director for conducting surveillances, providing training to employees, and maintaining EHS Quality Procedures.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement, and continuously improve company EHS Quality Procedures to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws.

  • Manage the creation and delivery of OSHA/NAVSEA SI training content to meet regulatory requirements.

  • Provide employees with the required safety training based on job functions.

  • Analyze and solve safety issues or problem areas on board vessels and at shore-based facilities.

  • Meet with site supervisors/team leads to resolve safety issues.

  • Conduct incident investigations regarding prevention, root cause analysis and injury prevention.

  • Perform workplace safety surveillances/inspections on board vessels and at shore-based facilities and provide reports with corrective actions.

  • Assess worksites utilizing Industrial Hygiene monitoring equipment and generating reports.

  • Respond to employee EHS questions and concerns, providing guidance as needed, as well as in emergency situations during after-hours for the purpose of resolving immediate, environmental, health and/or safety concerns.

  • Create reports and presentations as needed.

  • Seeks out opportunities for self-improvement through continuous education and training.

What you need to have:

  • 4 years relevant progressive experience with Bachelors in related field; 2 years relevant progressive experience with Masters in related field; or High School Diploma or equivalent and 8 years relevant progressive experience.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to develop professional relationships with senior leadership down to deck plate production teams.

  • Able to work with a team or independently with minimal supervision.

  • Working knowledge of NAVSEA Standard Items, OSHA standards, and NFPA codes along with other safety-related state and federal agency regulations.

  • Demonstrated ability to recognize, evaluate, and recommend controls for workplace hazards on board ships and at shore-based facilities.

  • Able to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

  • Experience using MS Office suite products for reporting and presentations (Word, Excel, Power Point).

  • Ability to organize and manage multiple priorities.

  • Must wear hearing, eye, head, and foot protection and other PPE when required.

  • Must have an interim secret clearance with the expectation to have a full Secret Clearance upon completion of EQIP and background investigation.

Bonus points for:

  • Credentialed as a CSP, ASP, or GSP.

  • OSHA-5400-Maritime Train the Trainer authorization.

  • DOT Hazmat Employee & RCRA Hazardous Waste Training

  • Experienced in providing training to shipyard employees in Shipyard Competent Person and Confined Spaces, Permit Authorizing Individual, Scaffolding Competent Person, PFAS, Fire Watch, PIT, Lock-Out/Tag-Out, HAZCOM and Respiratory Protection.

  • Experience in analyzing maritime paint samples for heavy metals.

  • Asbestos Inspector qualified.

  • Interacting with regulatory agencies such as OSHA and EPA.

Physical Requirements

  • Climb ships ladders, access points and scaffolding. Walk, crouch and bend to enter confined or enclosed spaces. Lift and carry equipment > 20lbs. Protection equipment for practical and instructional purposes. Wear a half face or full-face respirator if required.
