The Role

The Reactor Plant Planning Yard (RPPY) group in Department E83 is seeking a highly skilled and experienced professional to lead an electrical engineering team in driving innovation, excellence, and efficiency in the lifecycle management of select A4W NIMITZ Class propulsion plant electrical systems and components. . This position will play a key role in supporting the organization's strategic objectives and driving operational excellence across various functions.

The selected candidate will be responsible for managing a group of professionals leading the RPPY electrical design and lifecycle of electrical systems, components and drawings, including, but not limited to, instrumentation and control systems, power electronics, laboratory facilities, and drawings. The responsibilities of this group include developing design, operational and maintenance improvements for propulsion plant electrical systems and components, performing design studies (e.g., root-cause analysis and design improvements), identifying life-cycle cost reductions, conducting laboratory testing, directing activities of vendor and shipyard personnel, and developing recommendations to our NAVSEA 08 and Naval Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) customers with sufficient technical and cost justification. Additionally, this group will interact directly with Navy (NAVSEA 08), NNL, NNS SCN, and management personnel across NNS and the public shipyards (i.e., NNSY and PSNS) in order to assess problems and provide emergent support.

Key responsibilities include:

• Provide leadership and guidance to a team of professionals in achieving departmental goals and objectives.

• Collaborate with senior management to develop and implement strategies to improve operational efficiency and effectiveness.

• Oversee day-to-day operations and ensure adherence to established policies, procedures, and standards.

• Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) and implement corrective actions as necessary to achieve targets.

• Foster a culture of continuous improvement, innovation, and teamwork with the team.

• Develop and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders as well as partners. External stakeholders and partners include, but are not limited to, NAVSEA 08, NNL, Ship’s Force, NNS, Naval Shipyards and vendors.

• Provide regular performance feedback, coaching, and development opportunities to team members.

• Ensure compliance with requirements and company policies.

• Manage budgetary responsibilities and resource allocation within your section.

• Represent the department in cross-functional meetings and initiatives as required.

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 8 years of progressive technical experience in research, engineering and design; Master's Degree and 6 years of relevant experience; PhD and 4 years of relevant experience.

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice to Have

  • A strong background in engineering, proven leadership abilities, and a track record of successfully managing complex projects and teams.

  • Current, or ability to obtain/maintain, RADCON qualifications and physically access a wide variety of work sites including those aboard ship under various stages of overhaul or repair. This may include physical access to tight, low or high spaces involving climbing ladders, kneeling, stooping, standing, etc.

  • An MBA or MS Engineering Management is a plus.
