The Role

Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.

This position is at the request of Naval Reactors and the UK Ministry of Defense for an assignment at BAE Systems (BAES) in Barrow-in-Furness, United Kingdom. This position is located in Barrow-in-Furness, United Kingdom . The initial contract period will be two years, with the possibility of annual renewals thereafter.

This position will support development of the SSN(A) design from a build perspective as the program progresses through Stage 0 and into detailed design (Stage 1, 2, and 3). This activity is intended to support further development and sustainment of UK arrangement and design capability to meet the needs of the SSN(A) program. The principal objective is to reduce the current Build Schedule through opportunities and adoption of information from the US and increase platform availability through-life versus previous class.

An embedded Operations Consultant will support the SSNA Operations MAIT and MAT Ops Lead organization in the development of the SSNA design program. This embed will support the team through Stage 1 (Functional Design/Primitive modelling), Stage 2 (Arrangements/Detailed modelling) and the start of Stage 3 (Outputs) supporting integration of the spatial plan with the requirements for outputs into build.

The Operations MAIT Consultant is primarily intended to support the SSNA Operations MAT/MAIT organization, however, the position will interface with a range of key personnel across the program. This embedment role will support the development of the MAT/MAIT organization and the policies and processes that underpin it in delivery of the SSNA program goals.

The embedment will also support further detailed scoping of US/UK engagements via consultation and reach back VTCs and workshops identified within the SSNA US/UK plan.

Position key focus will be leveraging the US Design, Build, Sustain philosophy to drive benefits in the following areas in support of SSNA program goals:

• Design for increased Platform Availability - drive to increase platform availability to the navy for tasking throughout its lifetime

• Design for Build, Test & Commissioning (Delivery) - drive build schedule acceleration versus Astute and Dreadnought and increase delivery drumbeat

• Design for Cost Reduction (Affordability) - drive UPC reduction relative to Astute

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 9 years of relevant exempt experience;

Master’s Degree and 7 years of relevant professional experience;

Ph.D. and 4 years of experience.

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
